A Week of Worksop Skills Academy - Day 1

A short while ago, we spoke to a handful of learners at each of our skills academies to find out how they were getting on with their training, and what outcomes they were hoping for at the end of their learning journey's.

This week we're concentrating on our Worksop Academy, where we're now running our Skills Bootcamps in Plastering, and in Bricklaying, alongside the Introduction to Construction (ITC) and Digital Business Administration (DBA) courses.

The first person we spoke to was Philip Upchurch, who we caught up with in one of Worksop's dedicated classrooms... 


Philip used to be an engineer by trade, but after a change in his circumstances, which also involved moving out of his previous home, Philip made the decision to enrol onto our construction programmes, which are delivered around the corner from where he now lives.

After undertaking the ICT course, Philip passed his CSCS test and decided to push his skills further by signing up to the Plastering course. After this, he will be moving on to the Bricklaying programme so that his skillset is wider and more varied. 
Philip said "I'd like to work for a company initially as a site labourer before even considering becoming self-employed. I want to gain as much experience as possible, so working on site at an established company is the best way for me to do that."

He went on to say "Adam [WSA's Lead Tutor] is great, as are the people doing the course with me. I would definitely recommend it to others!"

Success Story: Skills Academy Learners Excel on CORE Special Projects Site in Barnsley

Recently, the Marketing and Employer Engagement team, Michelle Reece and Richard Trigg, respectively, alongside the Core Special Projects team, celebrated a significant milestone. Three of our dedicated Skills Academy learners have joined the CORE Special Projects Ltd team on their new site works in Barnsley. This exciting project involves constructing new roundabouts on Higham Common Road and Barugh Green Road, which will provide northern and southern access to the new proposed mixed-use development. Skills Academies Christmas Challenge Countdown Calendar

Christmas is almost here, and the excitement is growing in our academies as we stretch and challenge our learners to design something spectacular for this year's Academy Christmas Challenge!  Using all the theoretical and practical learning from the skills training programmes that our learners are progressing on, this exercise will enable them to further enhance their trade, teamwork, and personal skills, whilst allowing them to produce something they are immensely proud of. We'll be posting teaser snippets of the progress of each academies project, concentrating on one academy per day, without giving too much away, and when their challenge is complete, we'll be running an internal vote and revealing the results from last place through to first place on the last five days of countdown.
