A Week of Worksop Skills Academy - Day 2

Day 2 of 'a Week of Worksop Skills Academy' focuses on Jospeh [who does not wish to have his surname disclosed for personal reasons] and his amazing learning journey at our Worksop training facility.

Jospeh, who recently passed his ITC course, is currently undertaking the 4-week Skills Bootcamp in Plastering course at WSA, and is planning to move on the Skills Bootcamp in Bricklaying programme, spoke to us about how our academy has changed his life entirely...

Joseph, who admits that he's spent time in prison over the years, was a full-time carer to his father from 2018 until recently, when his father passed away. After finding himself on the streets, sleeping rough in Nottingham, he was eventually placed into a homeless hostel. It was there he realised that he really wanted to do something with his time and proceeded to enrol onto our Introduction to Construction course.

Joseph said:

"Adam [WSA's Lead Tutor] goes above and beyond. He's helped me with my personal issues, and I'm now much better at time keeping and computing as I had no experience with either of these things before I started the course. I didn't even know how to turn a computer on!"

He went on to say:

"This place gives you the opportunity to open up and move out of your comfort zone. People don't feel awkward. We have banter, but it never goes too far, plus you get free food here!

"Although we all learn at a different pace, they help you to move together as a unit, and we all complete at the same time."

"I want to stay on the course as long as possible to get as much experience as possible before I move into employment in plastering or bricklaying. I don't want to be on universal credit anymore. I want a proper job. I want to get out there. Own my own flat."

Joseph concluded our success story chat, saying:

"They've show me how much they want me to achieve here. They genuinely want you to pass, and even though I'm not used to getting up before 10am historically, I won't let anyone down."

It was an honour to talk to you Jospeh, and if anyone is going to turn their lives around completely, it's you. We wish you every success for the future!
