Nottingham Skills Academy, taking construction trades to a whole new level

After spending the morning at Derby Skills Academy yesterday, it was was on to Nottingham Skills Academy in the afternoon to see how how the new Skills Bootcamps in Construction courses were progressing.

As bright and welcoming as ever, the academy was bustling with learners, many of them located in the classrooms undertaking the theoretical side of the learning. 

Two of the academies current learners, Jonathan Shea and Mark Campbell, started on our two-week introduction to construction course and have since moved on to the four-week Skills Bootcamp in Painting and Decorating course. They were keen to explain how valuable their learning has been this far, and here is a snapshot of their feedback.

Mark Campbell (right):

"I'd been attending the job centre every two weeks for quite some time and nothing was coming my way that suited my skillset. I was with my advisor a few months back, however, and he showed me the Nottingham Skills Academy flyer. The course, which allows you to gain your CSCS card for free whilst learning about the fundamentals of working in the construction industry, sounded perfect for me.

It's been brilliant. The tutors are top draw. They're attentive and supportive, and I'd 101% recommend this course to anyone wanting to get their CSCS and start a new career in construction. I'd like to set up my own business one day, and this course has given me the confidence to do it." 

Jonathan Shea (left):

"I've worked in security in the past, then moved on to library work, but after being made redundant a while back, I decided that I wanted to start a new career in painting and decorating. The course is very informative and accessible. The knowledge of the tutors and the support that they give you is amazing. 

I'd eventually like to take my new found skills to places like South America and South Africa, where they are crying out for people with trades. In these poverty stricken places, I can teach others the skills I've learnt to help them make an amazing career out of painting and decorating peoples homes and businesses, or just to be able to improve their own homes. I would happily recommend this course to anyone!"
